Read 1 Samuel 2:1-10
There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. (v 2)
May 12, 2012, I graduated college. May 26, 2012, I got married. June 22, 2012, I moved to Columbus, Ohio. July 5, 2012, I officially started summer Greek, my first seminary class. It was a very quick turnaround from one life to another. I left a comfortable life in Manhattan, Kansas with friends and family nearby and moved on to a life I never expected, a life changed by the Rock.
I will never forget the moment. During a break from school my senior year in college, I came back home to Wichita. While I was there, I needed to run some simple errands around town. I had been wrestling with the idea of full-time ministry for the past couple weeks and realized that it was so heavy on my mind that I was completely distracted while driving.
I pulled into a parking lot, concerned that my current state of mind was going to cause a wreck. I told God that more school was not something I wanted to do. I am not a good student, and I don’t find going to class enjoyable. If I was going to go to seminary, God was going to have to make it happen. The next thing I knew I was enrolled for classes and looking for a place to live in Columbus.
I believe God, the Rock, changed my life for the better. My time in seminary and my experiences in parish ministry have been the best times of my life. I was leading worship at my internship church recently when I stopped and looked around and realized how lucky I am to be there and how much I love my job. God changed my life. I am thankful that it happened, because I know that if it was up to me, I wouldn’t be nearly as happy as I am.
What is God telling you? I can’t answer that question, but if you listen, great things can come out of it. Listen to God, and the adversities we face — whether physical, spiritual or emotional — can be crushed by God Almighty. God is good.
