Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’ ?” (v 42)

Foundation: something upon which one builds. In order for something to last, it must have a strong foundation. “Building on the Rock” is a familiar phrase around here. What is the Rock? Who is the Rock? Where do we find the Rock? Perplexing questions.

The rock is something that can be counted on to support what is built upon it. An insufficient foundation will not last the test of time. We know we can rely on the rock, or foundation, for our strength and for guidance.

Is the rock material or person? This question could lead to some very lengthy discussions. Jesus, God made man, is considered our Rock, our foundation. We pray to God and ask his help in building a life that is true and just. The only way to achieve this goal is to develop a strong foundation.

Where do we find the rock? Does the rock find us? What do we have to go through to make sure we have a solid rock or foundation? I’m not a theologian, but I have experienced the creation of a solid foundation. I was in the home construction and remodeling industry for some 25 years. I thoroughly understand the necessity of a strong foundation.

In 2011, I was confronted with a situation that had but one end. There was no cure for my disease. The only solution was an organ transplant, and my odds of receiving one were slim to none. I prayed every night that God would bring me an organ to save my life. I prayed the same prayer for six months. I changed my prayer one evening, and I don’t know why. It was short, sweet and sincere. I simply said, “It is your will, not my will, oh God. If you want me to receive a transplant, I’m ready. If you want to take me home, I’m ready for that, too.”

In those few words, my foundation took on a whole new meaning and strength. I had been building my faith with the help of a man who has become a very dear friend. He brought me the word of God and my foundation was strengthened through faith. I am here today because God sent me Richard to be his voice. God strengthened my foundation so I can now better serve him.
