Wednesday, March 23 Read Romans 8:18-39

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Unconditional Love

This evening when I head home from work, I will stop by Doggie Daycare to pick up my furry daughter Pandi. Pandi is a very busy border collie. She will have played all day, but when the girls bring her out to me, she will be overcome with joy, pulling on her leash and wagging her tail and prancing to the car for our ride home.

Once home, Pandi will dig through her toy box, looking for the perfect toy to offer me. Iíll toss it a few times and, if I ignore her, she will once again search for the one toy that will make my playing experience complete.

If I go out for the evening, I know that when I return home Pandi will be thrilled to see me. It wonít matter if I am grouchy with her before I leave. She will still greet me with that unconditional love. She seems able to overlook those things and acts like Iím her perfect human. If Iíve had an exceptionally stressful day, she seems to sense that I simply need the therapy of her sitting with her head in my lap. Pandi always has time for me.

Itís hard for me to imagine anything or anyone loving me the way my Pandi loves me. Love from people tends to come with more conditions. How a person looks, their attentiveness and even their earning capacity can affect how lovable they are to others.

Fortunately for us, God loves us regardless of our flaws. He is willing to look past all of our shortcomings. Sometimes we get so caught up in our lives we forget about God. We forget to pray and give thanks, except when we need something. We have other activities that encroach on our worship time.

And then we have a life event that rocks us, and we run back to God for comfort and guidance. Fortunately for us, God loves us and is there for us. He hasnít kept a tally of our shortcomings, and he doesnít get hurt feelings. He simply gathers us to him and loves us unconditionally. We donít have to wait until Sunday. We donít have to look a certain way or do anything to earn Godís love. God always has time for us.
