Nourishing Faith

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8.

Faith. It is the very core of our religious tradition – the very reason we hold to the promises God has given us. Different stages in our lives can affect our faith in various ways. As young children, we find comfort in faith and answers to life’s mysteries. As we age into young adulthood, faith keeps us grounded and reminds us that we are never alone. In our middle years, we are confronted with the sting of reality: This is a temporary life.

Life can sometime cause us to challenge faith with anger, fear and the question “why?” Why give us this beautiful life if we can cherish it for only a few decades (if we are that lucky?) Why give us the love of a child if one day we must leave him? Why must we look death in the eye as if we fear not? Why must we witness evil in this world?

These feelings and questions are packed with enough emotional turmoil to keep you curled up in the fetal position all day. Luckily we have an answer. The simple - yet not so simple - answer is faith. God has given us this world and the opportunity of choosing faith or rejecting it. If we choose to keep close to God and his word, can fear and anger really attach to our hearts? How can the anxiety of death keep us up at night if we are covered in the blanket of God’s love?

Faith at some stages of life comes easy, while at other stages it seem too far away to grasp. What remains is that faith is constant, even if it is clouded with our fears and concerns. To uphold our end of relationship with God, we must choose faith and nourish our souls with it. The world’s beauty abounds with wonders that fill us up and keep our hearts floating with love. Keep steadfast in your foundation and know that, through every stage of life, faith will see you through. We must choose to keep our hearts on the cross and our minds in prayerful meditation.

Oh Holy God, in our times of fear and uncertainty, remind us of the Cross and the truth it provides. Strengthen us and keep us near you. Help us grow our faith in you through the word and Holy Spirit.
