“What is the kingdom of God like? … It is like a mustard seed that someone planted in the garden...” (vv. 18-19)

Perfect Love

He (Jesus) said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.” My study Bible says the mustard tree represents the outward extension of the kingdom.

This parable makes me wonder what heaven is like. I am sure it is a question all Christians have. Many of us have our ideas of what we would like heaven to be. I am blessed to have grown up in the country, and I have lived in the country most of my life. My heaven is green fields, rolling green pastures, and country roads shaded on both sides by trees. I prefer this to streets made of gold. The one thing I am sure of is that heaven is a place of love and joy.

I believe that in heaven we are surrounded by love, that heaven is a place of perfect love. I believe this, because I believe love is what Christianity is all about. Love is mentioned in many chapters in the Bible, and my favorite Bible verse is found in 1 Corinthians 13, which defines love. The last verse in this chapter says: “Faith, hope and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.”

Christ admonishes us in John 13: 34-35: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should also love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
