Take My Life, That I May Be

The ELCA has a saying. I am not sure whether they call it a mantra, a slogan or a motto. It really doesnít matter, it is designed to help us be better Christians. It is: Godís Work, Our Hands. Our adult Sunday school teacher, the Reverend Richard Hoyer, retired, has suggested to the class that it should be modified or amended to: Godís Will, Our Voice; Godís Work, Our Hands.

I think that the modification fits one of my favorite hymns

Take my life, that I may be consecrated, Lord to thee;
take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.

That verse is clearly telling us that we should be proclaiming the good news of the life and death of Christ. Godís Will, Our Voice. What better time to proclaim the good news. Do you have a neighbor you should be inviting to church? Do you talk about religion with your co-workers and acquaintances? Do you talk about Jesus to your grandchildren?

Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love;
take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

Our church is good at doing a lot of physical things for others, but could we do better? Are you physically able to be using your hands and feet to assist with the St. Paulís Breakfast, Family Promise, Altar Guild, serving as a communion assistant or Bags of Blessing? Godís Work, Our Hands.

Take my voice and let me sing always, only for my King;
take my lips and let them be filled with messages from thee.

Do you have a voice that should be part of the choir? Should you join Stephan Ministry to help others by finding a way to console their grief? Can you take Communion to the homebound &/or sick of our congregation once every two or three months? Godís Will, Our Voice.

The hymn and list goes on. Lent is the time to search your heart to see if there is something else that you could do to promote the word of the Lord and the miracle of Christís birth and death for our sake. If you can look in the mirror knowing that you are made in Christís image and say you have given enough of your talents, so be it. If you canít, this would be a good time to consider the mantra and volunteer for another assignment.

Godís Will, Our Voice; Godís Work, Our Hands.
