And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. (v 18)

JESUS SPRITE

Spending time with my sons at Sunday school is one of my most enjoyable times of the week. I love sitting on the floor with them and singing songs with silly actions. I’m a working mom, and it’s one of the few organized children’s activities I have the privilege to regularly attend. I love seeing them with their friends and getting to know other parents of young children.

A weekly favorite Sunday school song goes like this:

The wise man built his house upon the rock,
and the rains came tumblin’ down.
The rains came down, and the flood came up,
and the house on the rock stood firm….
…So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the blessings will come down.

The tune contrasts a wise man, whose house built on a foundation of rock stood firm against a flood, with a foolish man whose house built on sand went splat! after a flood. Blessings coming down from heaven are the result of prayers going up to the Lord.

When my son Jesse was about two, he started to pick up on the songs. At first, he would only do the actions while we were in Sunday school, but soon I caught him humming or singing bits of them at home. I loved watching him learn, and I really was proud to witness the seeds of faith — planted early in a toddler — starting to sprout.

One afternoon, I heard him singing the Wise Man song, but his version went like this:

“So build your life on the Lord Jesus Sprite!
Build your life on the Lord Jesus Sprite!
Build your life on the Lord Jesus Sprite!
And the blessings will come down!”

It was one of those things you write in a baby book. It made me laugh: God certainly has a sense of humor! It also made me remember that my children — even though they have been exposed to the Rock at a very young age — will still require tending as their faith continues to grow.
